National Night Out is a nationally organized event that unites communities and local law enforcement.
The event is usually held on the first Tuesday of August from 7-10pm. Neighborhood Watch groups all over Salida
and the rest of the county get together for activities and BBQ's. This particular neighborhood called
Kiernan Estates celebrated on a street in which could be blocked off and used for the gathering. Neighbors
were urged to turn on their porch lights and come outside and meet and socialize with their neighbors. Representatives
of various Law Enforcement and Emergency Services agencies paid visits to the different neighborhood
celebrations. Kiernan Estates had a BBQ, media representation, donations of food, prizes and decorations.
Activities for the children included a flashlight Scavenger hunt to where they formed groups and located
clues which corresponded with the different "Neighborhood Watch" signs within the subdivision. A good time
was had by all and the exicitement of the evening was a visit by the Sheriff's Dept. and CHP, along with McGruff
the Crime Dog. Salida Fire Department was out there most of the evening and brought the evening to a close with a
blast of water from their water nozzel on the top of the fire engine. It was the hotest day of the year,
so the blast of water was enjoyed by many! Thanks to all who helped make this event such a fun success!
